At the Camellia Shop, we would love to stay completely ""earth friendly"" and not use any insecticides or fungicides on our plants, but in order to ship our plants, federal regulations require the use of insecticides in most instances.
Because our growing areas reside within a fire ant zone, we are required by Federal Law to drench all of our plants leaving our premises with an insecticide. This insecticide is applied as a drench to the root zone only and is applied to each plant within 2 days of shipment and will remain active in the soil for up to 180 days from application.
Occasionally we use an oil spray on the foliage of our plants. This is known as a horticultural oil and usually made up of petroleum or other oil. This is used to prevent Tea Scale and Mites that are known to attack camellia foliage.
We have not had the need to use fungicides on any of our plants that are ready for shipment.
Due to the required use of insecticides, we do not recommend attempting to make tea for at least 6 months after receiving your plants from Camelliashop.com. We also do not recommend making tea on plants younger than 3 years old to give the plant adequate time to grow and mature.
