Our Plants

Many times our customers want to know about the plants we sell and grow.  We've listed a little about our plant sizes and what we do for them here in our nursery.

Sizes of plants we sell to our customers

Beginning April 2011,  we will be primarily selling two sizes of plants.  A 1 to 2 year size and a 3 to 4 year size.  There may be some varieties that we sell in only one of the two sizes and is based soley on variety.

The 1 to 2 year size are sold in 6" pots and average 8-10 inches tall. These plants are priced from $9.99 to $25.00.

The larger 3-4 year plants are sold in 3 gallon pots and average 18-24 inches tall.  These plants should be priced from $45 to $65 based on variety.  If these are available they will be listed on our site.

Plant Origins

All of our plants for the most part are grown from cuttings from stock we own or have been authorized to harvest.  We have climate controlled propagation houses and they are full most of the time.  We are extremely careful about where we get our cuttings if we do get any from outside sources.  Only trusted sources are used for propagation to be sure that the plants we are producing are free from disease & pests and are true to name.

CamelliaShop Seedlings and Originals

We grow many plants, most of them developed by different people.  We do have varieties of camellias that we have developed and you may see them on the site as "CamelliaShop Originals".

Nature of our Plants

It is our goal to provide the best plant for our customers. We grow all of our own plants from cuttings.  Some varieties may do better with more than one plant in a pot while others may have only stem. It is based on variety and which way each variety will produce the better plant.  There are critics that  disagree with the use of more than one plant per pot.  But we feel there is no basis for concern as we have grown camellias both ways for over 50 years and in our experience, it does not matter whether there is one plant per pot or 10.  They grow equally as well and within a short period of time, the roots and the plants will graft together to make one super-plant.

Fertilizing our plants

To keep our plants healhty, we provide a balaced diet.  We use Holly Tone, which is an organic fertilizer from spring to fall and a small amount of Osmocote 13-13-13 (8-9 month) in the spring and summer.

Pruning our plants

We keep pruning to a minimum on most of our camellias as we want them to grow into nice plants to ship to our customers.

Insecticide & Fungicides

At Camelliashop, we only use insecticides and fungicides on an as-needed basis and to meet the requirements by the USDa in selling and shipping plants.  While we would love to be completely organic, we can not be organic and ship plants.  But we do use them as little as possible.

Climate our plants are growing in

Our plants are grown outdoors in southeast Georgia.  Our winters are mild (average 25 degree F low) and our summers are hot (average 90-100 degrees F high).  We grow them in shade houses so they are not in the direct sun.  They are watered, by hand, once a day during the hot weather and about 1-2 times a week during periods of low heat stress.  They are not grown in greenhouses in winter - they are completely outdoors under shade year round.

Healthy Plants

All plants are guaranteed to be healthy at the time of sale.  We are certified by the Georgia Department of Agriculture to ship our plants to all parts of the continental United States in the soil.  Our nursery and our plants are inspected several times a year and we have never failed an inspection.  We are proud of our plants and providing our customers with top quailty for the money spent for our plants.
