Basic Description Camellia FACTS!

  • Camellias are native to China, Japan and Southeast Asia and date back for thousands of years. They have only been in the US in the last two centuries!

  • There are many species of Camellia, all with varying characteristics. Overall, there are over 250 species of Camellia with thousands of varieties within each species.

  • Camellias will do well in a part-sun, part shade environment. Although there are some varieties that will tolerate more sun, most do well in a shady location

  • Camellias like a very well draining soil. They will not tolerate wet feet or soil that holds too much water.

  • Camellia sinensis is the only camellia species that is commonly used for tea because it contains caffeine. The other camellia species, better known for their bountiful blooms, are just for looks!

  • Each camellia is different...you should get to know the preferences of each variety. Camellias are not difficult to grow as long as you are familiar with the plant's preferences.

  • Most camellias will do well in the climate zones of 8 and 9. Many will do ok in zone 7 which is a little colder, but you should ask if you're not sure, before planting. There are also many cold-hardy hybrids which have proven to do well in very cold climates such as Climate zone 6.

  • Camellias are not difficult to grow as long as you are familiar with the plant's preferences.
